What we hold

An adult's email address, so the account can be signed into and billed. For each learner: a first name, an age or school year, and the language they work in — all given by the adult who set the account up. And the conversations themselves: what a learner types to the tutor, what the tutor replies, and the figures and pictures drawn on the whiteboard.

We do not ask a child for an email address, a photograph, an address, or a phone number, and there is nowhere in the product to give one.

Who else sees it

To answer a question, what a learner types is sent to the company that runs the language model. When the tutor's reply is read aloud, the words of that reply are also sent to a speech service to be turned into audio: Microsoft's when the free voice is in use, the language-model company's when it is not. Microsoft publishes no data terms for the free service — it is the one its own Edge browser uses to read a page aloud — so we cannot say how long it keeps those words, or whether it uses them for anything else. Payment is handled by Stripe, who receive the adult's billing details and never the learner's work. Email is sent through Resend. Everything else — the database, the recordings of how the product is performing — is infrastructure we run ourselves.

A learner's work is never sold, never used for advertising, and never used to train anyone's model.

How long we keep it

  • Conversations, including the whiteboard: 90 days, then deleted.
  • Pictures the tutor made: deleted with the conversation they belong to.
  • Technical logs: 31 days.
  • Performance traces: 14 days.
  • Account details are kept while the account exists, and go when it is deleted.

Your rights

You can ask to see what we hold about your family, to correct it, or to have it deleted. Deletion removes the account, every learner under it, their conversations and the pictures made in them. Write to us and we will do it.

Deleting your family's data reaches everything we hold. It does not reach the company that runs the language model: what a learner types is sent there to be answered, and we read that company's terms before writing this. They do not state how long they keep it, whether it trains their systems, or which country it is processed in — and the consumer privacy policy that would answer those questions says in its own text that it does not cover people using applications built on top of them, which is what your child is. We would rather tell you that than let the silence pass as reassurance. Deletion does not reach Microsoft's speech service either: we have no account there, and no way to ask it to forget the words it was sent. These are the two recipients where “we delete everything” means everything we hold.
